Course Description

The course is designed for artists and activists who want to understand the role of social change and how they can participate. The course will examine the exciting and prolific overlaps between cultural practices and socially engaged art that have been generated by the recent global social movements. Instead of assessing the political effectiveness of mourning, listening to, organizing, dancing or partying activities, these lectures will examine cultural practices alongside contemporary art practice. The course includes guest lectures by scholars, activists and artists such as: Chido Govera and Gulf Labor's Hans Haacke and Sharon Hayes. The course was designed by Pedro Lasch, an artist and Duke professor. Nato Thompson is the Creative Time artistic director. It challenges students to view the MOOC as both a social form and an artistic one. The practical component, local productions and global exchanges are the main means of this.

Projects are great for those who have experience in activism or art creation, but no previous knowledge is necessary.
