Course Description

This online course is free and aims to increase awareness among healthcare professionals about the role of Clinical Bioinformatics in healthcare today. We will show you how Clinical Bioinformatics is an important bridge between cutting-edge science and clinical delivery of genomic medicine. Understanding the role of a Clinical Bioinformaticist will help you to see how important they are in ensuring that the benefits of genomic medicine are fully realized in patient care.

This is a very exciting time. We are now sequencing whole genomes in the clinic. This is the most detailed information we have about a patient. We can now see how genetic variants may impact health and can then direct precise medicine to individual patients. This is not without its difficulties. The genome contains a lot of information. It is like trying to find a needle in the haystack when you are trying to identify the causative variant (the gene that causes a change in health). What does this actually mean? This course will introduce you to the world of Clinical Bioinformaticians and show you how they work behind the scenes to find the right needle in the genomic data. It will also explain what happens next and how Clinical Bioinformaticians can make a difference in the patient's journey.

Clinical Bioinformatics requires a specific set of skills and expertise. Next-generation sequencing and data analysis allow the bioinformatician filter and classify information from the human genome. This course will help you understand Clinical Bioinformatics through case studies, interviews with bioinformaticians, and a host other activities.

Clinical bioinformatics is a link between biology and computer science. It requires specific skills and expertise. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), data analysis, and bioinformaticians can identify, filter, and classify variants in the human genome that are associated with genetic diseases. This course will help you understand the importance of genomic healthcare and how it works through case studies, interviews with bioinformaticians, and many other activities. You will also learn about the ethical implications of clinical bioinformatics, such as data management. We'll be asking questions about patient data storage and who has it.

You have the option to purchase a digital and physical record of your participation in this course. This can be used to show your informal Continuing Professional Development (CPD), commitment for your career, or awareness of issues in a specific subject.
