Course Description

This course aims to foster a critical appreciation of doping. This course uses a multidisciplinary approach to help you see the interconnectedness of different disciplines within a single subject. It will also allow you to compare and contrast different approaches. It will allow you to understand the complexity of doping. Doping is complex and is defined and identified by socially constructed norms.

This course will provide information on how doping was banned and the reasons for it. Doping is known for its negative aspects, such as performance enhancement and physical transformation. Yet, companies continue to make billions by selling body enhancement and other human enhancements. This will show how doping is not only a problem for sanitary reasons, but also raises legal, social and scientific questions.

To control doping, both governments and sport authorities created institutions that can not only define what is doping but also determine what preventive, repression and research methods should be used. The course also covers biological control measures, such as the bio passport, key legal aspects, and organisations that produce results, along with the sociological dimension of doping.

Besides the Professors of University of Lausanne, the best experts of doping are involved in this course: experts from an Anti-doping Laboratory (LAD- Lausanne-Switzerland), from the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport), from the UEFA (soccer), and from the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency).
