Course Description

This course provides an overview of the evolving regulatory environment since 2008's global financial crisis and 1997 Asian crisis. After these two crises, governments across the globe adopted a range of new financial regulations to ensure financial stability. In this regulatory environment, it is becoming increasingly difficult for banks to make a profit. The emergence of advanced models of artificial intelligence, and the inventions of blockchain have made technology significant advances. These developments have fueled the rise of fintech companies all over the globe.

This course examines fintech regulation for emerging markets, using case studies from South Africa and China. This course focuses on the socioeconomic environment of emerging markets as well as political risk, which can be a significant source of uncertainty for fintech entrepreneurs. As an example of fintech innovation in emerging countries, peer-to-peer lending is used along with remittances.
