Course Description

Find out how equity and debt can be used for infrastructure investment financing and how to approach investors investing in infrastructure. The OECD estimates that the world's infrastructure investment needs by 2030 in transport, electricity generation and transmission & distribution will total 71 trillion dollars. The figure is equivalent to 3.5% of World's annual GDP between 2007 and 2030.

According to the European Commission, Europe would need infrastructure investments of 1.5 to 2 trillion euros by 2020. For the Trans-European Transport Network program (TEN-T), 500 billion euros will be needed to implement it. 400 billion euros are required for energy distribution networks and smart grids. 200 billion euros is for storage and transmission. 500 billion euros must go towards the construction and upgrade of power plants. To achieve broadband diffusion targets, an additional 38-58 billion euros and 181-268 billion euros of capital investment are required.

In the past, infrastructure investments were funded using public funds. Private investors are now more involved in infrastructure investments due to severe budget limitations and poor management by the public authorities.

This course examines how private investors view infrastructure projects from the perspective of debt and equity.

This course focuses on practical aspects of financial planning, which are the most commonly used methods for financing infrastructure investment. Students will be able to connect the theory to real-world examples and case studies through repeated application of real-life cases.

Students will have the ability to analyze complex transactions, identify the main elements and suggest appropriate solutions from the perspective of financial advisors.
