Course Description

This course will examine the causes of high healthcare costs and offer solutions to improve quality, cost, and value. High healthcare costs can be attributed to payment models that pay healthcare providers per service provided. This means they are charged more for both volume and intensity. This payment model is known as a Fee for Service (FFS). The combination of different payment models, care management, plan design, consumer engagement tools and technology can lead to more sustainable solutions.

We will use this information to explore different situations and show you how coordinated care and payment strategies can be used to improve patient health as well as reduce the cost of healthcare delivery. The learner should be capable of: The trends and drivers of healthcare spending are seen from the perspectives of different stakeholders. This includes medical providers, insurers, government purchasers and payments. Critically evaluate the impact of the ACA and its various modifications on financial and strategic approaches. 3. Assess the current healthcare payment systems and the direction value-based payments are heading. 4. Identify ways financial and non-financial metrics could be combined to enhance the value proposition of healthcare stakeholders.
