Course Description

Learn the basics of genealogy to create your family tree

Do you have ever wondered about your family history or created a family tree? This tutor-led genealogy course is for beginners. It will teach you how to find your family's past and record it.

This course is not limited to one country. You can learn about your family history from any country.

Get a genealogy introduction

Learn how to analyse and find sources, explore different research strategies, and deal with genealogy databases and wildcards. You'll learn all about the importance and challenges of name changes for genealogists.

You'll be introduced the main sources types, including census, civil, and military records, and will learn how to use them.

Get DNA testing

Learn more about the technical aspects of genealogical research, such as the principles and the Genealogical Proof Standard. You'll also learn how to establish proof.

You'll become a scientist for a day and learn how DNA testing works in genealogical research. You'll learn the principles of genealogical inheritance and how autosomal DNA testing can help genealogists.

Make a family tree

Discover the secrets of your family's history and make your genealogy a tangible family history. You'll learn the best ways to record and document your research so it can be passed on to future generations.

You'll learn how you can balance historical context and genealogical data, dig into local and general histories, use maps and photos to bring your family's history to life, and how to use maps and photographs.

You'll also be following the journey of one woman as she searches for her family tree and learns more about her past throughout the course.
