Course Description

International human rights law is a dynamic and constantly-evolving area in international law. Human rights are said to be universal and applicable to all regardless of their status or origin. What are human rights? And do they apply to everyone? This ExpertTrack by the University of Kent will help you determine whether human rights law is truly universal and can protect all human beings, regardless of their origins or circumstances. The first course will explore the history and structure international human rights laws. This course will examine the nature of international human rights law, its evolution, and question its universality. It will also explore the legal options for protecting human rights at the United Nations level. Learn how current human rights law impacts marginalised people. The second course examines how this body of law serves those who are least fortunate. The second course will examine how universality claims are challenged by claims made by women, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented migrants. You will develop plans and strategies to improve the protection of human right's. The third and final course will examine how universality claims can be challenged by certain ways of living, including indigenous peoples and peoples of faith. The course will examine the effects of the pandemic on human right protection and more generally what can be done to improve it in the future. You will develop plans and strategies based on the ExpertTrack materials and your professional experience to promote human rights protection.
