Course Description

The Algae Technology Educational Consortium, UC San Diego and funding from the Algae Foundation and the National Renewable Energy Lab and the U.S. Department of Energy funded this course. These tiny bio-factories use photosynthesis to produce chemical compounds we can use for food, fuel, medicine and energy. To teach you basics of algae, we have gathered together the best algae specialists from academia and industry.

The course will explain what algae is, their importance, and the reasons we care about them. The vast array of algae will be covered, including their characteristics and uses.

You will also learn more about the ecology of algal growth and how it interacts with its environment. Finally, you'll learn about the process of algal bio-manufacturing, including the production and benefits of these products.
