Course Description

Good improvisation uses a variety of tools and techniques to respond and create your own interpretations. This course will help you learn the art and technique of jazz improvisation. You'll also be able to improvise using a minor blues sequence or rhythm changes. You will learn how to respond to different music pieces and improve your ability to improvise. As you listen to John Coltrane's tracks, you will learn about both the theoretical and practical sides of music. You will also learn about modal jazz and its importance. A particular focus is on The Clock of Keys and its application to All the Things You Are. The course's final sections will introduce you two jazz standards, and help you understand the inner workings behind improvisation. Through a combination of theory and practice, you will have a solid understanding of how to improvise jazz standards. You will learn how to improvise over rhythm changes, and how to play left-hand voicings in three ways.
