Course Description

Researchers are often misinformed about patents and Intellectual Property Rights. This course will explain what IPR is, with an emphasis on patents. This course also examines the role of patents within the biotech industry and how they can be used to protect your research. Is your research protected?

Many people have misconceptions about patents. It is important to understand what they are and how they function. Next, we'll explain how to file for them and what the deadlines are. It is important to know how to locate existing patents in order to be able to determine whether or not your research needs to be protected.

You will have 7 sessions to complete the course. At the completion of each session, you should:

Define the various types of IPR

Explain the patentability conditions for an invention

Define the different stages of a patent application

Search and retrieve patent information in databases

Learn how to read and comprehend a patent

Write claims related to biotechnology

Explain and understand the concept of freedom to operate
