Course Description

A revolution in writing education took place half a century ago. Teachers asked: "What if we studied how professional writers wrote to help us teach writing better?" This led to the writing process movement. It emphasizes writing not as a product, but as a process. Writing is not something that happens overnight. It doesn't come from the mind fully formed and perfected the first time. All writers are involved in a process. While the process may vary from writer to writer and can be quite different, there seem to be some common stages that apply to nearly all writing situations. This course shows how writing can be taught as a process. It can help students feel more comfortable and confident as writers. The course will teach students how to teach writing as discovery and how to use low-stakes writing in class. They will be able to fill their toolbox full of practical strategies and techniques to teach writing to any age group, in any circumstance.
