Course Description

This course teaches you the basics of transmission electron microscopes in materials science. You will understand the papers in which TEM was used, and the theoretical foundation for taking a practical training in TEM. Modern TEM is a versatile instrument that can be used by one user. It provides access to chemical and structural information at every scale, from micrometers to sub-angstroms. A thin and transparent sample can be used to measure crystallinity and grain size. You can image the crystal lattice with atomic resolution. This allows you to see grain borders and interfaces. This is the best method to study nanoparticles.

This course will give you a deeper understanding of modern TEM, and its connection to:

The instrument's operation and optics

The Physics of Electron-Matter Interactions;

Get insight into the material properties of your sample.

These are the basics of:

Identify TEM methods that can be used to solve specific scientific problems.

Describe TEM data in articles. Appreciate the technological advancements that, for example, have led to sub-angstrom resolution with aberration correction.

This can be used as a foundation for further practical training with this amazing instrument and a step stone to learning advanced techniques using magical names such as adarkfield holographya, or aangular resolved electronic energy-loss spectrumcopya.

Background information:

The prerequisites for college are crystallography, diffraction and college optics. Fourier optics and more advanced crystallography are also essential. Solid state physics and solid-state physics are great.
