Course Description

The Illustrator type effects allow logo designers to create dynamic typographic treatments using a few simple steps. These effects can be used as logotypes or as a part of a larger logotype. This class will teach designers a variety of techniques that will allow them to style type in ways that are commonly used in designing logos. These tips will be useful for designers of all levels, but they will also be useful for those who are not familiar with Illustrator or type in general.

What You Will Learn

This class will teach you how to use Adobe Illustrator types effects to the fullest extent while you work on your own project. As I show you how to manipulate type using shapes, paths and effects, follow along with the screen-capture videos. We'll cover:

  • Sketching and Researching Type Effects. How you can find successful examples of distorted text and sketch your initial ideas before using Illustrator.
  • Using Basic Shapes. How do you manipulate type around shapes like circles, triangles and diamonds?
  • Using Illustrator Effects. How you can use the toolset for Illustrator "effects" from free distort, arc to shear, and everything in between.
  • Finalizing your Design. How you can add highlights, shadows and texture to your type designs and outputting it properly when done.

What You Will Make

This class will help you create a range (3-5) of type treatment options that can be used as the foundation for logo design of your own or clients. These treatments, similar to my work with Native Sons, can be used to create an identity package that can be used for different purposes.

These techniques are the basis of my identity design work for clients in a variety industries like Native Son Alehouse and North Yard Supply Co. I want students to become familiar with Illustrator type so they can create amazing results for their own projects and businesses.
