Course Description

Learn how to provide patient-centred healthcare

Stigma can negatively impact access to care and quality of treatment for patients with a substance abuse disorder (SUD).

This course is two weeks long and will examine the stigma surrounding addiction as well as how society's approach to the disease affects public perception.

You'll learn how to reduce stigma, provide individualised, patient-centred healthcare by looking at SUD through the lenses of other chronic relapsing diseases.

As a healthcare provider for addiction medicine, you are responsible for educating yourself and others about the science behind evidence-based treatment of SUD. This knowledge will allow you to foster the right attitudes and professional commitment for treating patients with SUD.

Learn how stigmatizing language affects people with SUD

You'll learn how to identify common stigmatizing language and how it can negatively impact healthcare providers' perceptions of people with substance use disorders.

You'll also examine the impact of this stigma on patients with SUD, particularly as a deterrent for seeking or continuing treatment.

Learn how to foster positive attitudes with the American Society of Addiction Medicine

You'll gain a solid understanding about the effects of stigma and how to eliminate stigmatising language.

Learn from the experts at The American Society of Addiction Medicine to gain a deeper understanding of how you can provide better care for patients with addiction.
