Course Description

Cycling is complex despite its simplicity. Cycling is a perfect hybrid of human and machine. It is deeply rooted in many socio-technological systems. Cycling is widely recognized as an essential ingredient in addressing a variety of social and individual challenges. The Netherlands is often referred to as a living laboratory because of its cycling infrastructure. However, there are significant differences between time and space that allow for better understanding of possible causal relationships. These are also being recognized by top-tier (inter)national researchers from many academic fields. They are discovering reciprocal relationships between cycling and spatial, ecological, historic, cultural, economics, biological, and political structures. Unraveling Cycling City combines the most current knowledge gleaned from extensive research and practical experience on the Dutch cycling system. It provides a platform for easy access to information about key causes and consequences, as well as an opportunity to educate others about the system's complexity and support group discussions around the globe.
