Course Description

Imagine being able to walk inside your artwork. Learn how to make your illustrations come to life in Virtual Reality using Tilt Brush.

This class is for people who have experience in drawing, painting, or illustration. VR artwork has been getting a lot attention. However, it often has a look that speaks to the program it was made in and not an artist. I want VR to be a tool that suits your art style and offers all the benefits of VR's ease-of-use and gesture.
This class will be about:

  • Understanding the history and use of VR and examples by artists
  • How to get oriented in VR safely
  • Prepare your illustration for Virtual Reality by creating in Photoshop in depth
  • How to get started in Tilt Brush, and how you can make creative decisions in an entirely new dimension
  • Share your work via video, photos, or GIFs

I hope this class makes it easy to work in this new technology. It's not difficult. Your personal style is the best way to bring VR to life.

Although this is not a comprehensive list of all buttons in Tilt Brush we do cover a lot of it. I only focus on the most relevant for illustrators. Let's get started!

Note: You will need a VR headset to follow along (I use the Oculus VRift) or the Tilt Brush app by Google.

Edit: Tilt Brush became open-source after I published this class! This means that Google has decided to stop developing the software. However, this is not the end! This program is still available for purchase. Google shared the code with everyone, so anyone can modify it and create new versions of the software. You might want to look at the one called "Open Brush" here. It's not that different from what I'm writing, but it will be a great place for the software's evolution. It can be accessed with the program SideQuest. SideQuest was mentioned in lesson 12 of my class. I was primarily focusing on how it could be used to record 16x9 video. It's a great place for experimental software such as this. This news was funny because of the timing of my class. I won't necessarily add lessons to teach Open Brush to anyone, since I don't know Open Brush and it's not too different from mine. But I'm happy for you to point me in that direction!
