Course Description

Copywriting is not about knowing HOW to write. It's knowing what to write. It's not your ability to create compelling copy that is your challenge as a copywriter. It's your ability and willingness to learn about what you are selling, and who you are trying to sell to. The best copywriters ask the right questions.

About me

I'm your instructor, Alan Sharpe. I started my career as a copywriter back in 1989. In the years that followed, I have worked as both a freelancer as well as as an in-house copywriter for an ad agency. I have worked in all media channels, including offline, online, outdoor and mobile. Print ads, radio commercials as well as email sales letters, banner ads and brochures. I was able to get married, buy a house, and raise two children on my only copywriting income. Since 1995, I have been teaching copywriting.

Why should you take this course

This course addresses the two most important questions that beginning copywriters face. What is copywriting? Number two, how do you find out what topic to write about?

You will be able to identify what you can expect as a copywriter at the end of this course. You will also know the questions to ask before you begin any copywriting assignment.

Course structure

This course is divided in two sections. Section one explains copywriting and discusses the major types. Section two focuses on specialized copywriting. The section then introduces you and your audience to the main audiences that will read your copy. It also discusses the types of writing that people mistakenly call copywriting. The first section ends with a glossary of common marketing terms and copywriting terms that you should know before you offer your services to copywriters.

Section 2 explains in great detail the seven questions that you need to ask before you can create great copy. We will discuss what you are selling and where it is selling. Who are you selling to? Why should they buy? Who are your competitors? What are the most important things to say in your copy and what you want prospects do after reading your copy. The second section teaches you how to research products and services so that you can write effective copy.

This course contains practical, step-by, step advice, tools, tips, and tricks that I have learned over the years as professional copywriter. I provide examples from the real world to show you what copywriting is and how to start any copywriting assignment.

Ideal student

This course was created for writers who want to create compelling advertising copy but don't know how to begin. This course is for you if the thought of writing 1,000 words of promotional copy every day before lunch makes you feel anxious.
