Course Description

Anyone who has a career in technology loves to be able to help their family and friends. Your brother's wifi has stopped working, your best friend had her credit card information stolen in a data breach, while your mother's computer continues to get infected by malware despite the fact that she swears she didn't click the suspicious looking link. They are not afraid to ask for help and want to be better informed about security. It can be difficult to explain to your grandmother how to use a password management program to her grandmother, who cannot even turn on her iPad. You can perform the same tasks security professionals do every day, including threat modeling, vulnerability remediation, reconnaissance, and threat modeling. This will allow you to help your loved ones create a better security position for them without making it seem like a rude security expert and not really creating a customized solution. Alexis Lee will present a few examples of non-security professionals who need information to protect themselves and the current security practices they use. Alexis will discuss how to have a constructive conversation about the potential dangers of security and how to correct them without inciting panic. She can also help you provide accurate advice without confusing your family into thinking that good security is impossible. This talk aims to demonstrate how easy decent security can be when professionals listen to the struggles of our loved ones and in turn our customers, and offer solutions that they can take on their own. It is possible that a solution to a problem might be impossible to implement in a normal work environment. However, if it makes your aunt's chocolate chip cookie recipe a little safer, that's what matters most.

In this talk, Alexis Lee will give a few examples of everyday, non-security experts, what information they need to keep secure, and what current bad practices they are currently using

It is possible to perform tasks that security professionals do on a regular basis, such as reconnaissance, threat modeling, and vulnerability remediation to quickly and easily identify and even assist your loved ones in creating a better security posture

Learn better security practices! However, you know very well trying to explain how to use a password manager to your grandmother who can hardly turn her iPad on will be a bit of a struggle

Sometimes a given solution to a problem would be an absolute disaster to implement in a typical work environment, but, if it means your aunt's chocolate chip cookie recipe is just a little more secure, then that's all that matters at the end of the day

The aim of this talk is to show how simple decent security can actually be when we as professionals take the time to truly listen to our loved ones (and in turn, our customers) struggles and offer solutions they can stand up on their own
