Course Description

Would you like to see the Adobe Textile Designer plug-in return? Do you long for a simpler way of creating pattern repeats with Photoshop? If you answered "Yes" to these questions, you'll love this class (and all the others in this series). This series is about the Pattern Preview , a new feature in Photoshop 2021. This feature allows you to see a live preview as you arrange the Photoshop pattern design.

Pattern Preview is misleading as it is more than just a preview tool. These lessons will teach you how to use the Template Tool to create a fitted pattern. I will demonstrate the benefits of Smart Objects as well as how to create backgrounds. After completing the lessons, you will be able to create a variety of patterns that can be used for art licensing and submissions to any POD sites such as RedBubble, Spoonflower, or Society6.

This class is for artists who have some knowledge in Photoshop and pattern design. However, it is also suitable for beginners. Although the tech is complex, you will find that the main focus of the class is to create the pattern and prepare the repeat for use. I will demonstrate how to troubleshoot problems that may arise with the Pattern Previewer throughout the class. You can also see the follow-up classes Half-Drop Repeat and Colorways Using Photoshop 2021 (available now)and Seamless Repeatswatch Export Using Photoshop 2021 (coming soon). This class will also teach you how to create a sell sheet for your pattern.

I will include the following key concepts:

  • Arranging elements to create an effective pattern
  • Create a tile that can easily be repeated
  • Multiple methods are available to change the background of your design
  • Backup your patterns
  • Here are my methods for creating the initial layout.
  • Perfecting the composition
  • You can use these approaches in your creative work

This course is great no matter what your art purpose. You will learn how to work efficiently and professionally.

Intro:

This brief introduction will give you a general overview of the class.

Lesson 1 - Motifs in Procreate & Exporting

This video will show you how I created the pattern motifs in Procreate. I will show you the liquify filter, hue and saturation adjustments. Next, I will show you how to export the PSD file into Photoshop.

Lesson 2: Photoshop Initial Set Up

This lesson will show you how I set up the first repeat. I will discuss the demise and introduction of the pattern previewer feature. I discuss the benefits of smart objects and show how to troubleshoot problems that can sometimes arise with the Pattern Previewer.

Lesson 3 - Backgrounds and Color Adjustments

This lesson will be about finishing the first pattern tile and moving on to adding backgrounds. I will show you how to add backgrounds and change their colors. I will also demonstrate how to change the colors of motif and how to edit smart objects. If necessary, I will show you how to completely recolour the pattern.

Lesson 4: Alternate Imported Backgrounds

This lesson will show you how to create a seamless texture background. The last step is to save the single repetition.

Lesson 5 - Exporting a Multi-Repeat and a Single Tile

This lesson will teach you how to save the files that you have created. I will show how to export the PAT file to keep your patterns safe. We will save the Photoshop PAT files and create a large document to be used on a POD website. Finally, we will export the single repeat.

Lesson 6: Wrap Up

Here are some examples of color options and mockups. This final segment will wrap up everything we have discussed and give you encouragement to get started today!

Concepts covered

These concepts include Procreate filters, Procreate brushes and hue and saturation. Procreate export and airdrop are also covered.

You will receive the bonus of...

  • About 45 minutes of instruction from an instructor who has been in graphic design and education for more than 40 years
