World War 1: Trauma, Memory, Controversy

The First World War is still a fascination more than 100 years later. It was a war with unprecedented brutality and scale, with many casualties. It left a toxic legacy that will be felt throughout the 20th century and beyond. Many of the problems that were not resolved in 1918 would result in another world war in 1939.

This online course is free and will teach you about the diplomatic, medical, and social history of the First World War. The topics covered range from the mental and physical trauma suffered by combatants to those of civilians during wartime.

We will examine the problems historians have in accurately estimating war loss figures. Through literature and art, we will examine expressions of trauma and grief. We will explore why certain nations honor the dead with poppies, and what sites of remembrance we still visit today. We will also explore the controversial origins of the First World War.

This course will teach you how to do your own research on First World War casualty figures and to compare different sources to determine their accuracy and usefulness. You will also be able to share your thoughts with other learners via an online platform if you wish.
