Description

Aircraft maintenance technicians (AMTs) perform a variety of repairs and inspections on aircraft. To perform these repairs, AMTs use tools such as volt meters, wrenches, hammers, clamps, screwdrivers, and wire cutters, among others. These professionals work as part of a team that includes aircraft engineers, pilots, part suppliers, aircraft repairmen, security personnel, and aviation managers. AMTs work in both the private sector and for government agencies, including the military. Technicians must also follow all relevant regulations related to work performed on aircraft. They often work outdoors, with exposure to the elements (such as hot or cold temperatures) for extended periods of time.

AMTs are required to be certified from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) (outside of military positions, which have their own requirements). FAA certification requires being at least 18 years old, passing a series of tests within a 24-month time frame, and being fluent in the English language. In addition to FAA certification, it is common for AMT positions to require relevant work experience. Employers also typically require the ability to lift at least 50 pounds, to tolerate exposure to aviation fuels and chemicals, and to climb, use hands for gripping, and work under pressure.
