City-planning engineers play a key role in maintaining the healthy growth of their communities. They are generally responsible for: planning land use within the community; making zoning and construction recommendations; studying environmental impacts of land use; solving problems caused by zoning and usage regulations; and overseeing cost studies which determine whether renovation or complete reconstruction of blighted or underused areas is necessary.
City-planning engineers must analyze large amounts of data, such as vehicle or traffic patterns and input from residents and commercial business owners. They must keep these concerns in mind when recommending zoning, land use, and easement rules for the community's government to implement. Problem-solving is also important; for instance, if a community expresses concern about intersections or the placement of necessary services, the engineer will study how transportation, residential areas, and commercial plots interact with one another to create a dynamic community. They also work within the budgetary constraints of their communities and typically prioritize projects based on public safety and potential generation of revenue for the town.
City-planning engineers also commission environmental impact studies and ensure that community land use does not create new problems or exacerbate existing ones with regard to issues such as groundwater-erosion and habitat-destruction. They incorporate these concerns into any and all cost-benefit analyses for land use and construction-permitting which they recommend.
A college degree in a field related to civil or community engineering is highly beneficial for aspiring city-planning engineers; most in this position also work internships during school and lower-level jobs in larger communities with entire urban engineering staffs. These engineers generally work in office environments during traditional business hours.
