Description

The draughtsman (draftsman) is responsible for transforming others' ideas into specific “maps” used to guild the physical construction of entities such as buildings, machines, computer chips, and roads; this can be done freehand, although it is now common to use computer-aided design (CAD) software. These maps or plans are also used by others to determine the feasibility of a building or item.

The draughtsman works closely with designers of large-scale systems such as architects, designers, and various types of engineers. The essential skills of a draughtsman include excellent understanding of spatial relationships, dimensional and technical drawing, and math. Also important are the ability to envision and give shape to entities that don't yet exist. Most positions are office-based, although some travel to work sites may be required. Draughtsman typically work during regular business hours, although some overtime may be required due to deadlines.

Trade or technical schools and two-year community colleges may offer relevant education and credentialing needed by draughtsmen. Also important are having assisted a draughtsman in his or her work and a background in commercial or industrial design. Patience is essential, as numerous drafts, revisions, or edits often must be completed before a plan is approved. The successful candidate will have experience working on multidisciplinary teams, strong communication skills, and knowledge of one or more CAD programs.
