Description

Piping designers are responsible for all aspects of the design, implementation, and maintenance of piping construction. This includes using drafting software and extensive research into existing piping structures to design new piping to meet current needs. This requires coordination with other engineering and planning groups to understand the project scope and needs, as well as where piping needs to go. Piping designers must work within a strict budget framework and develop alternative plans for piping needs with a variety of costs, materials, and layouts to allow for flexibility in construction. They must meet proper safety guidelines, as well as ensure structural integrity and the ability to meet proper pipe pressures. They must ensure there is a sufficient layout of pumps, exchangers, and pressure vessels to meet site requirements related to pressure, temperature, and suction. Piping designers then must ensure completion of design and make any changes necessary as the piping is implemented.

Piping designers work in a mix of environments. They work for the most part in a drafting room environment with a draft team they manage. They usually work a standard 40-hour week, with some overtime as project deadlines approach. They also must make site visits and meet with other engineers and teams to develop an understanding of the project requirements. Once a design is completed, they spend a significant period of time o -site, ensuring proper implementation and safety.

A bachelor’s degree in mechanical or civil engineering - or a related field - is required for piping designers. Several years’ experience in the field is also required, as these professionals must work independently and generally have wide latitude in the piping design process.

Roles & Responsibilities

As a Piping Designer with 6-9 years of experience in the AE, your main responsibilities include:

  • Designing and developing piping systems for various projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client specifications.
  • Collaborating with engineers and other stakeholders to create detailed piping layouts and drawings.
  • Conducting site visits and inspections to assess existing piping systems and propose modifications or improvements.
  • Reviewing and approving vendor drawings and documentation to ensure accuracy and adherence to project requirements.

Qualifications & Work Experience

A Piping Designer is responsible for creating detailed designs and plans for various piping systems, including industrial, commercial, and residential applications. They work closely with engineers and architects to ensure that the design meets the project requirements and regulations. The duties of a Piping Designer include developing 2D and 3D models, analyzing and interpreting blueprints and specifications, selecting appropriate materials, and coordinating with other departments to ensure a smooth installation process. Strong technical skills, knowledge of piping codes and standards, and proficiency in design software are essential for success in this role.
