Electrical foremen are responsible for managing electrical crews during the installation, remodeling, or repair of electrical equipment. This can include upgrading wiring and installing new equipment. The foremen must supervise and ensure that their crews stay on schedule and provide quality work. Electrical foremen must also know how to read electrical plans and should be familiar with current codes for electrical wiring. They are also sometimes expected to help with the actual electrical work. In addition, they are typically responsible for checking over completed work to ensure that it meets the standards of quality required.
Electrical foremen are generally required to have a high school diploma or equivalent, but the most important qualification is relevant work experience. Most electrical foremen need to have an electrician’s license and at least five years of related work experience. They may also be required to have management experience. Their work hours, travel demands and working conditions can vary. Some work must be done at night and or or on the weekends, and electrical foremen may need to travel -- within a given town or possibly long distance -- depending on the company.
