Course Description

This course may also be taken as ECEA 5707 for academic credit, which is part of CU Boulder's Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

This course is the third in the Modeling and Control of Power Electronics sequence. This course will give you an overview of electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and the impact input filters can have on converter response. The course will teach you how to properly damped single- and multi-section filters that meet conducted EMI attenuation requirements. This is without compromising frequency response or stability of closed loop controlled power converters.

Students are strongly advised to complete the CU Boulder Power Electronics specialty as well as Courses 1 (Averaged-Switch Modelling and Simulation) as well as Courses 2 (Techniques of Design Oriented Analysis).

* Introduction to Power Electronics (ECEA 55700)

* Converter Circuits (ECEA 5611)

* Converter Control (ECEA 5702)

* Simulation and Averaged-Switch Modeling (ECEA 5655)

* Techniques for Design-Oriented Analysis (ECEA 5706)

You will be able:

* Recognize conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI), and the need to implement an input filter

* Learn the principles of input filter design based on impedance interactions and attenuation requirements.

* Single-stage input filters properly designed and damped

* Multi-stage input filters properly designed and damped

* Computer-aided simulations and tools can be used to verify the input filter design
