Course Description

The role of sports is huge in modern society. Few of us stop to consider the bigger questions about money, politics and sex. The course uses the skills of sociology, history and anthropology to provide new perspectives on games that we see and enjoy. This course is the updated version of Orin Starn's "Sports and Society", which attracted more than 40,000 students. Both popular sports such as soccer, or afootball (as it is known outside of America), and basketball and baseball will be covered. We'll also cover lesser-known activities like fishing and mountain climbing. This will change the way you look at sports and how you think about them.
