Electrical superintendents oversee all aspects of the planning, implementation, and completion of electrical projects of construction or repair work for construction contractors, private firms, or energy companies. Their duties include examining plans and potential sites, as well as developing a plan to install all electrical wiring and equipment installation needs to a new or renovated building. Electrical superintendents develop and enforce a budget for their projects, as well as supervise workers and field personnel in implementing the electrical plan. They also ensure all safety measures and regulations are followed, as accident prevention and worker safety are high priorities in this potentially dangerous environment. They monitor work progress and coordinate with the site coordinators or general superintendents to deliver progress reports. Testing and maintenance of completed facilities may also be the responsibility of electrical superintendents.
Frequent travel is a requirement for this position. Electrical superintendents are needed on-site to develop their implementation plans and subsequently monitor activities of their work crews, ensure progress and safety, and oversee quality control testing once the project has been completed. The work environment may be indoors or outdoors depending on the project site; it is typically noisy and dangerous due to the surrounding construction activities and the nature of electrical work.
Electrical superintendents are generally required to have at least 10 years’ experience in the field as contractors or electricians. Typically, strong supervisory experience is a requirement, as they must manage a team of workers and meet goals independently of the other aspects of construction and with minimal oversight. All positions require a driver's license due to the need to travel. An electrician’s license (of at least journeyman’s status) is often required, and safety certification may be required depending on location and industry.
