Description

Structural designers are in charge of performing complex structure designs for their organization. They are responsible for drafting computer models based on project needs and creating drawings that are used for final construction plans. They also review construction models and revise them as needed based on engineers' recommendations. Additionally, these designers must follow strict safety standards on their preliminary sketches, adequately take construction materials into account for designs, and meet deadlines.Structural designers create specific reports detailing changes that need to be made to structure sketches. One of their main tasks include producing samples and mockup versions of structures using different drafting methods. They prepare structural plans and implement the work of architectural, electrical, and mechanical designers. Additionally, structural designers participate in review meetings and suggest changes to existing designs. Generally, these designers report to the senior designer or engineering lead in their department.A bachelor's degree in engineering design or a related field is necessary for this position. In addition, previous experience in structural drawing may be preferred. Structural designers must be proficient with computer design software such as AutoCAD, pay strong attention to detail, and be highly organized. They must be able to work effectively on their own and in a team setting with other designers, as well as have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Structural designers should have advanced knowledge of industrial methodologies as well.
