While trainee recruitment consultants are employed by a wide range of companies, they are employed primarily in fields which facilitate a high turnover of employees and rapidly-expanding businesses. Those in this position must be energetic and very persuasive in order to convince qualified persons to work for a company.
Much of their time is spent networking to find potential applicants, which includes obtaining lists of college graduates in fields which best suit the company. It is also common to spend several hours a week on social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google+ to find prospects. After a list has been completed, contacting the individuals to set up interviews is the next step; depending on the company and position, the consultant may meet with some or all prospects or simply refer them to the appropriate departments to complete the hiring process. The recruiter may not only "pitch" the company once to attract a prospect, but also again when they agree to meet in-person with a representative.
Most companies employ this position with a base salary plus commission based on how many employees they recruit. Work hours are extremely flexible, as most of the time is spent compiling a database of potential workers which can be done at any time of the day, though most of these consultants work standard 40-hour weeks with some occasional overtime. Telecommuting may be part of the job, so some time may be split between a home office and professional office.
Requirements for the position can vary greatly, but at least two years of sales experience in a sales, advertising, or marketing position may be required by some employers.
