An environmental health and safety manager helps a company to realize risks and to prevent them from coming to realization. The manager will take objective evaluations of the various departments within the company to make sure that employees are adhering to safety standards. The safety policy must be perused to recognize weaknesses. Changes may be suggested by the manager to minimize safety risks. It is also important to ensure that the facility is not causing a detrimental effect on the environment around it. It may be useful to suggest changes that can be made to minimize environmental impact or to make the company environmentally sustainable; these changes can include waste disposal, material use, and energy use. The manager can work directly for a company or for a consulting company. The EHS manager may sometimes be in charge of employee training that relates to safety or environmental health, so that employees can aid in making changes. When accidents cannot be prevented and do occur, it is important to analyze why the event happened, how it can be resolved, and how it can be prevented from occurring again. These managers often have their own offices, but they also do work in the field that can sometimes be uncomfortable and physically strenuous. Strong computer skills are needed to be able to carry out research, to create reports, and to analyze data. A bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, environmental science, or something similar is usually needed.
