Course Description

This free online course introduces you to the scope and importance of environmental geomechanics. Firstly, the material provides the background to and explains the genesis of this up-and-coming field of research. It emphasizes the nature and composition of soil structure and its mechanics, and grapples with the problems associated with natural and manmade environments. The various properties of soils will be analyzed and the applications of industrial byproducts are discussed. Next, the course goes on to unpack the chemical characterization and corrosive potential of soils as part of looking at soil improvement and the characteristics of geomaterials. Finally, it emphasizes the hydraulic conductivity, and the thermal and electrical properties of different soil types. The relevance of various legal aspects involved in addressing the environmental consequences associated with geotechnical issues is also discussed in detail. On completion of this course, you will be able to understand the process of developing sustainable and environmentally sound solutions for geoenvironmental issues. It will be of benefit to students studying civil engineering, researchers in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering fields, or those who have an interest in new research fields centred on the built and natural environments.
