Course Description

Subcultures have been around for a long time. There were the greasers of 1950s America and the mods and rockers in the 1960s and 1970s in England. There was also the grunge of 1980s and 1990s. Each subculture is part of a larger 'parent' culture. This can often provide insight into cultural hopes and fears, especially among the youth.

This course will introduce you to Japanese subcultures, which have evolved since the 1970s.

However, it has a subversive power that encourages younger generations create the world they want. We will concentrate on the importance of immaturity, and vulnerability youth. These eventually allow younger people (or minorities) to remain as they are.

This course will be taught by, and, who are specialists in the topic. We will examine girls comics, boys comics, Hatsune Miku, cosplay, and Jpop idols. We will also explore J-pop idols, focusing primarily on the themes Love, Battle, Technology, and Fan culture. You'll also learn about the various cultural creations that support Japanese subcultures.
