Course Description

The human genome sequence revolutionized our knowledge of biology. But it's not just how your DNA sequence looks, but how you use it. What is the difference between genes that are activated and those that are not? This is controlled by epigenetics. Epigenetics is the answer. Since it became clear that epigenetic control is a contributing factor to diseases (especially cancer), epigenetics has been an important topic of research for the last decade. Epigenetic alterations can be passed on through cell division and, in certain cases, they are capable of acting similarly to genetic mutations. Epigenetic modifications can be reversed, which is a significant advantage over genetic mutations. They also have therapeutic potential. Recent research has shown that epigenetic changes are highly sensitive to environmental factors (such as diet). This has led to a lot of debate and public discussion.

This course introduces you to fundamentals of epigenetic regulation. The course will focus on epigenetic phenomena, which are manifestations epigenetic control in many organisms. The interplay of epigenetic regulation and environment, and then the impact on disease and epigenetic disorders will be examined.

Lectures cover all information, with recommended readings and necessary requirements. This course does not require additional texts. If you are interested in more information, the following book will provide additional details.
