Course Description

The unique course was created by the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The course will focus on horsemanship as a welfare aspect, in the context of "The Five Freedoms", which is animal welfare. We will explore the basics of horsemanship, including basic needs, housing, nutrition, and hygiene. Learn how to evaluate the horse's overall health and identify problems. We will also discuss the special needs of the horse and the major responsibilities that owners, handlers and competitors have to take in order ensure their horses' health and well-being. We'll also be discussing special topics such as disaster planning and international welfare efforts to protect horses and other equids working in important industries like racing, tourism, and mining. You will have the knowledge and skills to create a comprehensive welfare plan that can be used for all horses under your care.
