Course Description

Tomcat is a webserver that Java programmers and system administrators love. It allows them to publish their web applications on a superior web server. Tomcat, written in Java, is a free production-grade web server that runs on Unix, Linux and Mac OSX. It is also very easy to set up, with only minor configurations required for security reasons.
The lightweight Tomcat is a great web server for system admins. It's simple to use and has very low defaults that can be customized. Marty Kalin, a Java and Tomcat wizard, will guide you through the process of getting Tomcat up to speed.

  • Learn how to install, monitor, manage, troubleshoot, and troubleshoot Tomcat's web server
  • Learn how to publish Java web applications using the Tomcat webserver
  • Get real-life experience through hands-on web app installation and deployment exercises
  • Learn about web app types and concurrency issues. Also, how to troubleshoot web apps that aren't working.
  • Master techniques to mitigate security concerns about Tomcat web servers
  • Explore advanced topics such as remote monitoring, virtual hosting, or CGI

Martin Kalin holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Northwestern University and is currently a professor at DePaul University's College of Computing and Digital Media. He is passionate about commercial programming and has co-developed large distributed systems for process scheduling and product configuration. He is the author or multiple O'Reilly titles, including Java Web Services: Building and Running and Java Web Services.
