Institute Overview

Health Education England (HEE), exists solely to support excellent healthcare delivery and health improvement for patients and the public of England. It ensures that today's workforce has the right skills, values, and behaviours at the right time, and in the correct place.

HEE is responsible not only for attracting the right people into the National Health Service (NHS), it also develops people who are already working in healthcare to ensure they have the education, training, and flexibility to provide high-quality care for patients both now and in the future.

HEE's work covers many different professions, programs, and activities, including planning, commissioning, recruiting, and developing healthcare staff in various healthcare and community settings. At the moment, more than 160,000 students are studying to become part of the future workforce for healthcare in England. This includes nurses, doctors, midwives and paramedics as well as physiotherapists. There are more than 300 types of jobs in the NHS.

HEE is responsible for education and training the healthcare workforce. HEE also contributes to the embedding of research and innovation within NHS. HEE's Genomics Education Programme will be HEE's first contribution to FutureLearn. This programme is designed to equip NHS staff with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to ensure the NHS remains a global leader in precision and genomic medicine.
