Junior estimators are in charge of conducting accurate cost analyses and estimations for their organization. They are responsible for preparing preliminary estimates for conceptual projects and assisting more experienced estimators with direct cost reports. These estimators follow company procedures to facilitate and define project scope, as well as use their financial expertise to prepare effective proposals in a deadline-driven environment. They help other estimators with pricing schedules, participate in proposal preparation, and perform technical assessments to facilitate analysis functions. In all tasks, junior estimators must follow project specifications and any relevant confidentiality rules.Additionally, junior estimators complete risk analyses of data related to program costs. They prepare detailed reports based on economic assessments of key indicators, as well as assist with preapproval of estimates using limited information such as project scope and relevant precedents. Junior estimators conduct post-project costs analyses, provide input on competitive bids and negotiated contracts, conduct data collection, and develop models. Generally, these professionals report their progress to the chief estimator in their department.A bachelor's degree in math, economics, operations research, or a related field is required for this job. In addition, previous experience as an estimator and industry certifications may be preferred. Junior estimators must have strong organizational skills, have excellent problem-solving abilities, and pay strong attention to detail. They should be able to work effectively with other estimators, but also perform well on their own with minimal supervision.
