Description

An ASIC design engineer typically works within a team that is responsible for all aspects of design activities, including architecture definition, design specification, design flow development, logic design, and verification. ASIC is defined as “application-specific integrated circuit” and is an integrated circuit that is customized for a specific use, rather than for general use. The ASIC design engineer is typically responsible for designing and delivering large, complex ASIC designs, and they deliver efficient design methodology on industry-standard design tools.

To obtain this position, a person typically must at least possess a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field; however, a master's degree is often preferred. An ASIC design engineer also should have several years of experience in ASIC design. It is often preferred that the individual has a diverse background in verification methodologies, and it is typically required that they have strong programming skills, as well as Verilog, SystemVerilog, object-oriented programming, C++, and logic simulation familiarity.

As an ASIC Design Engineer with 3-6 years of experience in Canada, your main responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define and document ASIC specifications, ensuring alignment with project goals and customer requirements. This involves working closely with teams from different departments to establish clear specifications for the ASIC design, ensuring that it meets the project objectives and customer needs.
  • Designing, implementing, and verifying complex digital and mixed-signal ASICs using industry-standard design methodologies and tools. This entails utilizing established design methodologies and tools to develop and validate intricate digital and mixed-signal ASICs.
  • Conducting RTL coding, synthesis, static timing analysis, and DFT implementation to optimize ASIC performance and functionality. This involves performing various tasks, such as coding in RTL Register Transfer Level, conducting synthesis to optimize performance, analyzing timing constraints, and implementing DFT Design for Testability techniques.
  • Collaborating with physical design teams to ensure successful ASIC tape-out and working through any design-related issues that arise during the tape-out process.
