Career development specialists are hired primarily by universities, but they are also employed by staffing companies and other organizations. Most organizations are searching for applicants who have at least a bachelor's degree in counseling or a related field, although a master's degree is often preferred. The work is generally carried out indoors in an office environment, and these specialists will meet with various individuals throughout a normal workday. Their main responsibility is to help individuals determine their ideal career/job using computer assistance and various methods of counseling and questioning.In addition to offering career counseling, a career development specialist may be required to post part-time and full-time jobs on the organization’s webpage. If he/she works at a university, distributing flyers or other forms of advertisement throughout the campus may be a regular task. Furthermore, he/she may be asked to occasionally conduct presentations which show students the value of the career services center, as well as demonstrations of the software used.
