Most specialists look at employees' skill sets and match them to an area that is best suited to the employees' needs and company's goals. This also includes being able to promote, demote, and hire for specific job areas. Employment specialists must listen to the needs of the company and employees, learn how employees' skill sets would affect the company, and ensure that there is a "career profile" for all employees that includes work history, strengths, weaknesses, and other factors. They must also maintain files for employees and/or potential employees, as well as help new employees with training.Employment specialists deal with people for the majority of the day, and they must be outgoing, able to build relationships with others, have excellent written and oral communication skills, and have good listening skills. They must also have a basic knowledge of computers to input data and have strong research skills.
