Pedorthists are skilled in the techniques of shoe fabrication and management of the foot and are tasked with designing and fabricating shoes to treat foot problems such as neuropathy. Treatments are typically for those at risk of high pressure, sensory loss in the feet, poor circulation, ulcerations, and foot ulcers. They must design and fabricate a fitting for each patient's specific shoe and also make repairs and adjustments to these fittings.Pedorthists must be trained and educated in providing supervision independently and able to conduct patient evaluations and make custom-fitting shoes for specific patients. They must also set and follow-up on appointments with patients and develop specialized plans to meet their needs, and may also make cast measurements and modifications to achieve the right fittings. A bachelor's degree in a medical field and at least four years of clinical experience are generally required for this position, and pedorthists must also have at least five years of experience with diabetes- and foot-related conditions and be board-certified in pedorthics.
