WHAT IS THIS COURSE ALL ABOUT?Hard Surface modeling is a 3D modeling field that can be used for projects in engineering, industrial design, and prototyping. The hard surface modeling field is located in the middle of the path between pure polygonal modeling (mostly used for archviz or videogame industry) and solid modeling (purely used by CAD systems for very technical level). This modeling style offers both the creativity and finesse of solid modeling.
Hard surface modeling is an important aspect of your 3D artist career.
HOW DO I START?
First, the techniques and methods taught in this course can be applied to any 3D modeling software. As a teacher, my goal is to keep things simple, to use the tools efficiently, and to teach the basics that every 3D modeling professional should know.
Foundry's MODO901 was used for this course. You will need that software installed on your computer. You don't have to use the 901 version to do the same thing, but you should always use the latest version. Otherwise you may be missing certain tools.
The first lesson includes a link to download the sample files in MODO native format. If you prefer to use another program, you can also download them in OBJ format. You will also find the images that were used as blueprints, and an hdri image to illuminate the room.
WHAT CAN I LEARN?
This course will cover a variety of modeling techniques with the goal of showing you all the methods available to create a high-quality model. This means:
Maintaining a good mesh flow
All quads are used to create a finished mesh
Solving common problems
Adding interest and dimension to your project's look, be it lighting, modeling details, or materials.
Understanding the tools and how they can be used
