Investor relations associates generally work for financial/banking institutions and are responsible for helping to manage relationships with their institutions' investors, handling phone calls and correspondence, and participating in client meetings and other projects. Some may also be involved in information technology (IT) projects in order to improve transaction efficiency, while others may work with their companies' marketing teams regarding prospective clients/investors and maintaining and managing investors' data in computer databases.A bachelor's degree in in business, finance, marketing, or a related field and prior work experience in financial services are generally required for this position, though some companies are willing to train candidates with no prior work experience. Some investor relations associates must pass FINRA Series 7 and FINRA Series 66, and some positions require that candidates also have life and health insurance licenses issued by the state in which they operate.Investor relations associates must pay close attention to details in a fast-paced environment and be able to work well in team settings. Applicants for this position should have excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, oral and written communication skills, and a strong understanding of government rules and regulations relevant to the financial industry, such as those issued by the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC).Those in this position must always stay up-to-date within their industries by attending college classes or in-house training courses, reading professional journals, etc. Some may also be required to train and coach new investor relations associates.
