A gemologist, also referred to as a jeweler or a gem expert, is a person who works with precious stones and helps identify them and gems. The primary responsibilities of a gemologist are looking over certain stones and gems by using microscopes and other magnifying devices, and determining the gemstone's quality, value, and their authenticity. While they may work on their own at times, they usually work in a jewelry shop in the back of the store in which stone and gem identification and examination are conducted.

Gem cutting is also part of this job that involves cutting of precious stones to fit specific castings and molds. Also, it involves putting stones or gems into jewelry pieces to satisfy the needs of the consumer. Gemologists are tasked with a variety of duties they must take care of. They have to use specific liquids and chemicals to determine the chemical composition of the gems or stones they work with. They need to determine the purity or quality of the stone or gem and then estimate the value of it. They also need to inform their customers about the quality of stones and provide them with recommendations on which items they should be looking in.

Gemologists need to have excellent coordination. They should be able to operate microscopes as well as other tools used to identify gemstones and gems. Gemologists must be a chemist who is educated and be familiar with the materials they work with. Most gemologists need to obtain an accreditation for gemology that their employers typically require. Although many gemologists begin their careers working in jewelry stores however, some companies require that they have a Bachelor's degree from the field of gemology.
