Course Description

Data scientists in many fields, such as marketing, public health and civic hacking, need to work with socioeconomic data. The complexity of administrative geoographies (what is a Census tract?) can make it difficult to access high-quality and richly detailed data from government census agencies. These data can be difficult to find. This can make it more difficult to find the correct data. This course will introduce you to both the American Community Survey and the Decennial Census. This course will show you where to find information on household income, commuting, race, family structure, and other subjects of interest. This course will show you Python and how the Census API can be used for both small and large geographic areas. Pandas can be used to manipulate data and create derived information, such as measures or segregation. Geopandas offers some of its mapping capabilities.
