Course Description

Identify the clinical signs of diseased birds and when they require treatment

This veterinary course will provide expert advice on how you can recognize when your poultry are sick and what treatment options you have.

Learn more about poultry health and how to treat it.

This course is for both small animal vets as well as pet owners who own poultry. Small animal vets often feel unprepared for caring for sick birds, and are often unaware of the available treatment options.

The new owners might not be aware of predators and diseases that could harm their birds and may not have access veterinarians who are sufficiently educated.

Learn about the anatomy of chickens and how to prevent poultry disease

This course will teach you how to identify the most important anatomical features and organ systems of chickens.

You will work with specialists from the University of Nottingham to identify the main clinical features of poultry illness, as well the diseases that affect them, to determine when a vet should be consulted.

You'll leave with a practical understanding about how to reduce the risk that animal disease impacts public health, the key responsibilities for people who keep non-commercial poultry, as well as the main pieces and laws that apply to them.

Describe the key features of avian immunity and how this differs from mammalian immunity

Describe the key requirements of poultry regarding their housing, biosecurity, nutrition and protection from predators

Discuss the importance of vaccination in disease control

Discuss the main categories of infectious disease affecting poultry, including examples of pathogens causing respiratory, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and dermatological infections

Discuss the main categories of non-infectious disease affecting poultry, including examples of skeletal, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and dietary/nutritional disorders

Discuss the main diseases likely to present in backyard poultry in a small animal clinic and the decision process of how each condition could be managed
