Course Description

The impact of intellectual property rights (IPRs) on society and innovation is immense. Science, Engineering, and Business aim to create wealth by innovating products, designs, manufacturing processes, and models. Innovation leaders are often unable to protect their innovations and discover how they can benefit.

Through a mix of lectures and case studies, this course teaches how trademark laws can be used by businesses to protect their innovation. This course focuses on trademark protection as one of many tools companies have to protect their products and brands. We will discuss the theory behind trademark law and also discuss cases where trademarks might not be effective in protecting innovation. The course will address legal issues from a business perspective, rather than a strictly legal one. This is the first of four courses that focuses on protecting business innovations using copyright patent, trademark, strategy and strategy. Students may choose to take these courses in any order they feel most useful.
