IIT BHU was founded in 1919 as Banaras Engineering College in Varanasi. Over time, it changed forms became Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University. In 2012, it was granted the status of an IIT, and since the name stuck around, it became IIT BHU. This institute values Research and Development and is committed to expanding its collaborative and innovative efforts. It is supported by sponsoring agencies like UGC, CSIR and DOE and many renounced industries such as TISCO and ONGC.
IIT BHU offers around 35 programmes at Bachelor's, Masters and PhD levels. Spread across 14 departments and 3 interdisciplinary schools, the subjects include Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Physics and even Humanistic Studies. To boost collaborative efforts in R&D, more programs are being introduced for external candidates alongside a growing list of signed MoUs with reputed national and international organisations. It also has a Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) that offers technical support for producing futuristic research infrastructure and quality education.
For a few years, the institute has maintained its position in the top 20 engineering colleges in the NIRF rankings. Times Higher Education ranked it 801-1000 in 2021. In 2020, IIT BHU was ranked by various agencies: NIRF ranked it 26 Overall and 11 for Engineering. Outlook ICARE, Jagran Josh and The Week ranked it 16, 9 and 8, respectively.
In the 2020 placements, 71% of the students were placed, with an average salary of INR 8.19 LPA. The highest international and domestic packages were both more than 1 CPA. The Department of Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences maintained high placement records with recruiters from EXL, Wipro, Tata Steel, Amazon, Samsung and Microsoft. Education, Core, Analytics and Consulting sectors recorded the highest number of placement offers.
The institute has initiated programs that strengthen both the hard and soft skills of its students, to increase their employability.
